AI + Design
Direction

My thinking on where design and AI intersect — and why the creative director is the most important role in an AI-native studio.

“AI doesn't replace the creative director — it amplifies the questions they ask. My job is to ask better ones.”

Five Principles

01

AI is a creative collaborator, not a tool

The framing of AI as a tool flattens what it actually is. The best results come from treating it like a very fast, very literal junior designer — one you have to direct with intention, critique honestly, and iterate with.

02

Taste is the moat

When generation becomes instant, the bottleneck moves entirely to judgment. The designer who survives AI is the one with the sharpest taste — who can evaluate 100 outputs in 10 seconds and know exactly which one to push forward.

03

Prompts are briefs

A great prompt and a great creative brief share the same DNA: clarity of intent, specificity of constraint, and just enough room for surprise. Prompt engineering is brief writing. Designers already know how to do this.

04

Systems thinking scales AI

One-off AI outputs are parlor tricks. The real leverage is in building AI into your systems — design tokens, brand rules, component logic. When the guardrails are well-defined, the generation is consistently on-brand.

05

The director role gets bigger, not smaller

The creative director used to be downstream of production. Now they move upstream. The director sets the vision, defines the constraints, curates the output, and owns the aesthetic judgment. That role is more important than ever.
